Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Reformer Pilates Class
Trying something new can feel intimidating, especially in January, when it seems like everyone else already knows what they’re doing. If you’re thinking about booking your first Reformer Pilates class with us, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know so you can arrive feeling calm, confident, and prepared.
Whether you’re new to Pilates, new to reformer, or simply new to the studio, we want you to know that you’re in very good hands and very welcome here.
Please Arrive At Least 10 Minutes Early
For your first Reformer Pilates class, we recommend arriving at least 10 minutes early.
This allows time to:
Meet your instructor
Gives us a chance to talk you through the reformer machine
Ask any questions such as about your previous exercise history
Settle in without feeling rushed
The reformer may look a little intimidating at first, but it’s actually designed to support your body. Your instructor will explain how it works and make sure you feel comfortable before the class begins.
Let Your Instructor Know About Any Injuries or Concerns
Before the class starts, please do let your instructor know if you:
Have any injuries
Experience back, knee, shoulder or hip pain
Are pregnant or postnatal
Are returning to exercise after a break
Reformer Pilates is highly adaptable, and your instructor can offer modifications so you get the most out of your session safely. This is one of the reasons Reformer Pilates is so popular - it’s low-impact, supportive, and suitable for all.
Make Sure That You Bring Grip Socks
For safety and hygiene reasons, grip socks are required for reformer Pilates.
If you don’t have a pair yet, don’t worry, you can purchase grip socks at our studio for £12. Grip socks are compulsory as they help prevent slipping and allow you to move with confidence on the reformer.
Please also wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Leggings and a fitted top or T-shirt are perfect.
Don’t Worry About What Anyone Else Is Doing
This is a big one.
Everyone in the room is focused on their own movement, not yours. Pilates is a practice not a performance. It’s about control, strength, and connection to your body.
Your instructor is there to help to guide you through each exercise, and help you to feel your best. We make everyone feel extremely welcome. Our Reformer Pilates studio in Wigston is a space is designed to support you no matter what level you are at.
Don’t Be Nervous
Feeling nervous before your first Pilates class is completely normal. Most people walk in unsure, nervous and even indimidated, we totally get it, but we promise that they leave wondering why they didn’t start sooner.
Reformer Pilates is:
Low-impact
Joint-friendly
Slower-paced than many gym workouts
Focused on strength, posture, and mobility
You don’t need to be flexible, fit, or experienced. Pilates attracts people of all ages and abilities - and everyone starts somewhere.
