Red Flags to Look Out for When Choosing Your Pilates Studio
With more Reformer Pilates studios opening across Leicester, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. While beautiful studios and social media videos can be impressive, the quality of the instruction and the overall experience matter far more.
Whether you're completely new to Reformer Pilates or looking for a new studio, here are five red flags to watch out for before booking your first class.
Classes Are Too Big
If you're turning up to a studio with 15–20+ reformers, you're far less likely to receive individual attention and feedback.
One of the biggest benefits of Reformer Pilates is having an instructor who can observe your movement, correct your technique and make adjustments throughout the class. In larger classes, this simply becomes much more difficult.
Smaller classes allow instructors to support everyone in the room, helping you move safely, build confidence and get better results.
There Are No Modifications
No two bodies are the same.
Some people are returning after injury, others are post-partum, and some may have joint pain or limited mobility. A quality Reformer Pilates instructor should never expect everyone to perform exactly the same exercises.
Instead, they should offer appropriate progressions and regressions so every client can work safely at their own level while still feeling challenged.
The Studio Doesn't Feel Welcoming
Starting something new can feel daunting, especially if you've never tried Reformer Pilates before.
A great Pilates studio should feel friendly, inclusive and supportive from the moment you walk through the door. You should never feel judged for being a beginner, making mistakes or asking questions.
Be cautious of studios where appearance is prioritised over movement quality, mistakes are criticised, or the atmosphere feels overly competitive or cliquey.
The Instructor Is Working Out Instead of Coaching
Your instructor's job is to coach you, not join in with the workout.
They should be watching how you're moving, offering hands-on guidance where appropriate, correcting technique and ensuring everyone is exercising safely.
If your instructor spends most of the session doing the workout themselves, they're far less able to provide the coaching that makes Pilates so effective.
Exercises Feel More Like Social Media Than Pilates
Pilates has become incredibly popular online, and with that has come a rise in flashy, Instagram-inspired exercises.
While these may look impressive, they're not always appropriate, or necessary.
A good instructor will build your strength and confidence progressively, making sure you've mastered the fundamentals before introducing more advanced movements. Every exercise should have a purpose, not simply look good on camera.
