Which Pilates Class Should I Book? A Guide to Choosing the Right Level

If you’re thinking about trying Reformer Pilates, one of the first questions you might have is: which Reformer Pilates class should I book?

With different class levels available, it can be difficult to know where to start, especially if you’re completely new to Reformer Pilates or have previously attended classes somewhere else.

At Reform & Glow in Wigston, Leicester, we offer Beginner, Mixed Level and Intermediate Reformer Pilates classes, so you can find a class that suits your experience and gives you the right level of challenge.

Here’s our guide to choosing the right class for you.

Reform Beginner – The Perfect Place to Start

If you’re completely new to Reformer Pilates, Reform Beginner is where we recommend starting.

Our Beginner classes are designed to introduce you to the Reformer and the fundamental principles of Pilates in a supportive and welcoming environment.

You’ll learn how to use the equipment safely, understand the basics of spring settings and become familiar with key Pilates movements and terminology.

You can expect a challenging but achievable workout focusing on:

  • Core strength

  • Technique and control

  • Posture

  • Body awareness

  • Mobility and flexibility

Your instructor will guide you through each movement, with modifications and guidance available throughout the class so you can progress at your own pace.

You don't need to be fit, flexible or have any previous Pilates experience to join a Beginner class.

Reform Mixed Level – For a Range of Experience

Reform Mixed Level is designed for clients with different levels of Reformer Pilates experience.

It combines foundational exercises with progressions, meaning your instructor can offer different options throughout the class depending on your experience and ability.

This can be a great option if you:

  • Have attended a few Beginner classes

  • Have previous Reformer Pilates experience

  • Feel comfortable using the Reformer

  • Understand the basic Pilates movements

  • Want the option to make exercises easier or more challenging

Your instructor will provide both regressions and progressions, allowing you to work at a level that feels right for you on the day.

If you’ve never used a Reformer before, we recommend starting with Beginner first.

Reform Intermediate – Ready for More?

Reform Intermediate is designed for clients who have a solid understanding of Reformer Pilates fundamentals and are ready for more challenge.

These classes build on the foundations you've already developed, introducing more dynamic movement, increased resistance, balance and coordination challenges, and stronger transitions between exercises.

You can expect a more flowing class with a greater focus on:

  • Strength

  • Stability

  • Endurance

  • Control

  • Coordination

  • More challenging exercises and progressions

Intermediate classes move at a slightly faster pace and are best suited to those who already feel confident and comfortable on the Reformer.

How Do I Know When I'm Ready for Intermediate?

There isn't a set number of classes you need to complete before moving up a level. Everyone progresses at a different pace.

You may be ready for Intermediate if you:

Feel comfortable using the Reformer – You know how to set yourself up and understand the basic equipment

Understand the foundations – You’re familiar with common Reformer Pilates exercises and instructor cues

Can control your movements – You’re able to perform exercises with good technique rather than simply trying to keep up

Want more of a challenge – Your Beginner or Mixed Level classes are starting to feel familiar and you’re ready to progress

If you’re unsure, simply speak to your instructor. They’ll be happy to help you decide which class is right for you

What If I've Done Reformer Pilates Somewhere Else?

If you've attended Reformer Pilates at another studio, you may not need to start with Beginner.

However, Reformer Pilates class levels aren't standardised between studios, so an Intermediate class at one studio may be very different from an Intermediate class somewhere else.

Think about how comfortable you are with the Reformer, the basic movements and following instructor cues.

If you’re unsure which level to book, get in touch with us and we can help you choose.

Remember, choosing a Beginner class doesn't mean you aren't fit or strong. Reformer Pilates has its own techniques and foundations, and taking the time to learn them properly will help you progress safely and confidently.
